  4. Note that this program requires RISC OS 3.10 or greater to run.
  5.  
  6. This program is Shareware.
  7. This means that you can copy this program to anyone you like, but if you
  8. find the program useful, you should register, as explained below. This
  9. entitles you to the latest version of this program, and of all my other
  10. applications.
  11. If you do copy the program it should be in its original format, with ALL of
  12. the accompanying files. These are :
  13.    !Boot, !Help, !Run, !RunImage, !Sprites, !Sprites22, Code, MakeCode,
  14.    Messages, Sprites, Templates

  17. Purpose
  18. -------
  19. A replacement for Acorns !Chars application, with various enhancements.
  20.  
  21. To use
  22. ------
  23.    Double click on the icon in the filer window. This will open a window
  24. which looks almost identical to Acorn's own !Chars. Pressing menu (the middle
  25. mouse button) will make the differences more obvious. The menu contains the
  26. normal 'Info' and 'Quit' options, but in addition there are 'Font' and
  27. 'Options' selections. The 'Font' option leads to a sub-menu from where it is
  28. possible to change the font displayed in the main window. Selecting 'Options'
  29. will open a separate window, where it is possible to configure how !ZoomChars
  30. runs. The options are split into three groups :
  31.  
  32. Program options
  33. ---------------
  34. SHIFT inserts characters : turning this off will mean that pressing shift
  35.    over the !ZoomChars main window does not insert the character into the
  36.    keyboard buffer.
  37. Install on icon bar : turning this on will mean that the ZoomChars icon is
  38.    installed on the icon bar, as is normal with RISC-OS applications. The
  39.    main window may then be closed, and reopened simply by clicking select on
  40.    the icon on the icon bar. If this icon bar option is selected, the 'Info',
  41.    'Options...' and 'Quit' menu selections are only available from the icon
  42.    bar, and clicking menu on the main window only allows the font to be
  43.    changed.
  44. Auto open main : turning this on will mean that when the program is next run
  45.    the main window will automatically open. This option is only available
  46.    when the option to install on the icon bar is set.
  47. Default font : this allows the font that the default font for the main window
  48.    to be specified. Note that updating the default font will make the main
  49.    window revert to this font. [This seems less confusing than leaving the
  50.    main window font as it was.]

  52. Window options
  53. --------------
  54. Zoom window : turning this on offers a bigger display of the character under
  55.    the pointer in the main window. It can be set up in two ways - either to
  56.    only open if the adjust button is pressed on the main window, or
  57.    alternatively, to be permanently open and constantly reflect the character
  58.    under the pointer.
  59. The default positions for the main window and the zoom window. These can be
  60.    stored and cleared. If no preference is set, standard positions will be
  61.    applied by the program. Note that the default position is only set when
  62.    the program is first run. After that, the windows can be moved as desired.
  63.    Also the position of the zoom window only has an effect when it is set to
  64.    be permanently visible.
  65.  
  66. Display options
  67. ---------------
  68. Main window : The font size can be set for the main window display, in the x
  69.    and y directions. All sizes are in points. Additionally, it is possible to
  70.    turn on an option which means that the characters are aligned to a grid
  71.    which takes into account the maximum size of the characters.
  72.    [NB. Some fonts do not have the data which allows for correct calculation
  73.    of this grid, so if unexpected results occur, try turning this option off]
  74. Zoom window : The font size for the enlarged display can also be set. Note
  75.    that the size of the zoom window is set to be large enough for any given
  76.    character in the font at that size. Also it is possible to set the
  77.    zoom window to show the ASCII values of the character currently enlarged.

  79. Updating the options
  80. --------------------
  81.    Selecting 'Update' on the options window will update the options, and they
  82. will stay the same until they are changed, or the program quit, whilst
  83. selecting 'Cancel' will ignore any modifications which may have been made to
  84. the settings.
  85.    Clicking with select (the left mouse button) on the 'Save' icon will save
  86. the configuration to the position where the configuration was loaded from
  87. (see below for more information on this), or to a file !Configure inside the
  88. !ZoomChars application, if the default configuration was used on startup.
  89. However, clicking with adjust (the right mouse button) on the 'Save' icon
  90. will open a standard RISC-OS save box, and from here the settings can be
  91. exported to a position of your choosing. It is therefore quite easy to have
  92. more than one configuration file set up. It may be that this is useful if
  93. more than one person uses the computer, or alternatively, if different
  94. options are needed for different applications.
  95.  
  96. Loading options
  97. ---------------
  98.    When the program is initialised, by double clicking on the icon in the
  99. RISC-OS filer window, it will automatically look for a file called !Configure
  100. inside the !ZoomChars directory. However, as more than one status can be
  101. saved, it may be useful to have the program initialised in a setting tailored
  102. to a particular setting. Therefore, using Edit or another text editor, create
  103. an Obey file which contains something similar to the following line :
  104. *Run ADFS::HardDisc4.$.Utils.!ZoomChars ADFS::HardDisc4.$.Configs.ZmChConfig
  105. changing the paths as necessary.
  106.    Also, whilst the program is running, dragging a saved configuration file
  107. to the main window, or to the !ZoomChars icon on the icon bar, will load the
  108. options specified inside that file.
  109.  
  110. Other info
  111. ----------
  112.    Finally, the program counts its errors and their time intervals. If it has
  113. to report five errors, each one being within two seconds of the previous one,
  114. then the program will kill itself. This solves (hopefully!) the problems of
  115. an unbreakable error loop.
  116.

  123. -----------
  124. To register, send £5 to me, at the address shown below, stating what version
  125. of which of my programs you have. You can enclose your own disk for the
  126. programs, and if you do so you can deduct 50p from the price. Registering
  127. entitles you to upgrade to later versions of the same programs and to get new
  128. programs for the price of £1. Any additional contributions from overseas
  129. towards postage would be greatly appreciated.
